8 Escudos Obverse

1772 Popayan mint, 1 Real. King Charles III of Spain.

Mintmark "P", assayer JS.

Diameter: 22 mm.

8 Escudos Reverse This is the plate coin illustrated in both the 1969 Harris book Pillars and Portraits and 2002 Krause-Mishler catalogs. This is the only year that 1 Real silver coins are known from this mint during the reign of Charles III. A ½ Real coin dated 1772 from the Popayan mint has been reported in some reference works but has not been confirmed. The next silver coin from this mint was a ½ Real piece dated 1774. Silver mintage from Popayan did not resume until 1810.

 

1813 Popayan mint 2 Reales. Provisional coinage struck in copper.

Diameter: 17 mm.

1/4 Real Obverse
This is a necessity coinage struck by the Royalists during the War for Independence. It is the same planchet size as the ½ Real silver coin and has the same edge ornamention. The legend reads "Nuevo Reino de Granada" and "Ano 1813" and "Provincia de Popayan" and "2 Reales" with rosetas. 1/4 Real Reverse
